Michael joined Lopata Flegel in 2012 and provides tax planning and compliance services to closely-held businesses, large multi-state companies, and individuals with complex tax situations. He serves clients in various industries including manufacturing, distribution, real estate, restaurants, grocery stores, and software. He has a consistent focus on understanding each client’s specific goals and priorities, and makes tax savings recommendations, especially as tax laws change. He’s managed complex tax provision projects (ASC 740), analyzed numerous sale and acquisition transactions, and has made pass-through entity and owner tax planning a focus. In addition, he works closely with financial advisors and attorneys to implement estate planning including creating trusts, gifting and other wealth transfer opportunities.
Michael graduated with highest honors from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a major in accounting. He earned a Master of Accounting degree from the University of Southern California. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Michael stays busy being a dad of four young children. He is an avid golfer and has volunteered as a coach and young benefactor board member for The First Tee of Greater St. Louis. He and his wife Sarah are very active at St. Gerard Majella, and volunteer in numerous groups in the parish. In addition, the Durkin family loves traveling and visiting new places.
