What You Need To Know
The USPS has changed its postmarking process. Prior to December 24, 2025, mail was postmarked with the date it was dropped off. Under the new rule, USPS now applies the postmark on the day the mail is processed rather than the day it is accepted at a retail location.
This change is important for time‑sensitive mailings. There is now a likely delay of one to two days between when USPS accepts the mail and when it is postmarked.
Best Practices
- Avoid mailing time sensitive items on the date of a deadline
- If it is necessary for you to mail a time sensitive item, go inside the post office and request a manual (local) postmark to ensure the date is correct
- Use certified mail to ensure you have proof of the date sent (receipt, tracking information, etc.)
